- About Anemia | GIWWA
About Anemia Anemia is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide, often going unnoticed until symptoms become severe. In this section, you’ll learn about the different types of anemia, key statistics, and frequently asked questions. What is anemia? Anemia is a condition where your blood doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is essential because it carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. When you have anemia, your body doesn’t get enough oxygen, leading to fatigue, weakness, and other health problems. Why is anemia a global health concern? Anemia affects over 1.6 billion people worldwide, making it a serious global health issue. It is particularly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, where a lack of access to iron-rich foods and healthcare can exacerbate the problem. Children, pregnant women, and individuals in developing regions are especially vulnerable, which is why GIWWA is committed to addressing anemia at the community level.
